Born May 30, 1926 in Coody's Bluff Community, Nowata County, Oklahoma to James A. McMains and Golda Lee McMains. Howard lived in Nowata County all of his life. He married Margie Allison, September 17, 1948. He worked various jobs but his passion for Farming and Ranching led him to working at the Sale Barn in Coffeyville and Farmers and Ranchers Livestock in Vinita from 1963 to 2013. In 1971 Howard and son Jerry brought the first Purebred Limousin Cattle to Nowata County forming McMains Limousin Cattle Company. In 1972 they had the top selling Limousin Heifer in the Tulsa State Fair; which was just the beginning of things to come. Showing Cattle in many states and having several production sales at the Ranch.

Howard loved music and he could sing; he and Margie who played the piano ministered with their music for many years. He was very active in church and made sure his children had a Godly foundation to live by. Howard also loved Country music and would come to the house at noon every day to listen to Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

Howard enjoyed watching OU Football and Cardinals Baseball.

Howard was best known for his generosity and his quick humor as he was always teasing others.
